Aiolou Street

Aiolou Street

Like a more narrow extension of 28th October Street (Patision Street) toward the Acropolis, Aiolou Street starts from Eleftherios Venizelos Avenue (Panepistimiou Street) and ends in the Roman Agora – in the heart of Plaka.

Basically, it is a commercial street and most of it is a pedestrian precinct. There is nothing you could not find to buy while you walk along this street. Combined with the stores of the side streets (Sofokleous Street, Evripidou Street, Ermou Street, Mitropoleos Street and Adrianou Street) they will tempt you with their fresh foods, beautiful fabrics and household items, clothes of every kind or souvenirs of the city.

With the recent traffic adjustments around Omonoia Square, Aiolou Street has at its beginning two lanes going the opposite way, as it is in Britain, to better serve traffic going toward Stadiou Street and Eleftherios Venizelos (Panepistimiou) Street.

During the Reign of King Otto, Aiolou Street, along with Ermou Street, was considered the backbone of the former City of Athens. Even in present day, Aiolou Street still retains remnants of its past glamor.
