Ancient Period of Athens

During the Ancient Period, Athens played a leading role in Greece as well as in the broader region. Political and social developments in the city directly led to the establishment of Democracy.

Later, throughout the Classical Era, Athens became a principal political and cultural hub. Achievements in philosophy, literature, and theater, as well as in science, contributed significantly to the formation of the since proclaimed "Western Civilization".
