INTERCITY BUSES (KTEL)

Greece is a rather mountainous country, which explains why the train network was never able to offer passage to every part of the country.

So, the bus is more popular and for some areas the only mean of transportation for the intercity travel of the passengers.

The "Ê.Ô.Å.L." is probably the most unknown abbreviation in the country, meaning Buses United Proceeds Fund. The Ê.Ô.Å.L. was created in the 1950¢s to coordinate the running of urban and intercity transportation and since 1978, when O.A.S.A. was created; it serves only the intercity routes.

Every prefecture in Greece has its own Ê.Ô.Å.L. and in Athens there are two intercity Bus Stations, the one on Liosion Street for Central Greece (Thessaly and Central Greece) and the larger one on Kifissou Street that serves the rest of the country.

Both stations appear to be from some black and white period, Greek film, but at least they are in good operational state.

The Attica Ê.Ô.Å.L.¢s are located on Mavrommataion Street (next to Pedion tou Areos) for the eastern destinations and in Thisio for the western ones.
