LAND AND POPULATION

Athens constitutes the centre of the periphery of Attica, which is situated in the central part of the country and more specifically takes up the south-east part of Continental Greece.

The periphery of Attica has an extension of 3.808 klm˛ and covers the 2.9% of the total extension of the country.

It is administratively divided in four Prefectures (Attica, East Attica, West Attica and Piraeus) and concentrates the largest part of the population of the country.

More specifically, the population of the periphery of Attica is 3.761.810 residents, of which 1.142.056 that is 30.3%, are citizens of other municipalities, (according to the 2001 Inventory National Statistical Service of Greece) and covers the 34.3% of the total population of the country, which amounts to 10.964.020 residents.

However, already since the early '80s the growth rate of the population of Attica has ceased to increase compared to the overall population of the country, with slow but steady rates.

Note that according to the inventory of 1981 the population of Attica constituted the 34.6% of the total population in Greece, while on 1991 amounted again to 34.3%.

This is a fact that is explained by the trends towards saturation and congestion of population and activities, that emerged since the ˘80s causing serious problems to the urban environment and the functions of the city, as well as to the regional development policies that are being implemented the last years.
