MONASTIRAKI AND PLAKA TOUR
Brief description:
A classic stroll, even for Athenians.
Starting point:
Thisio Metro Station
Ending point:
Syntagma Square
Approach distance:
1.800 m
Ideal time:
Sunday morning, if you really want to see traffic. Saturday or workday morning, to avoid traffic jams during walking. Avoid after closing hours.
--------------------
Course:
After getting out of the Thisio Station, cross the road and immediately get onto Adrianou Street, where, depending on what day it is, you will most likely meet many wandering salespeople (a small paradise for collectors of strange small objects).
Walking for a while on Adrianou – while viewing the Grove of Thisio on your right hand side – take a left at the church of Agios Philippos and its like-named street, where you will immediately meet Hephaestus Street (a sidewalk). Hephaestus Street is one of the most central sidewalks of Monastiraki and, there, you can buy anything from bead to antique furniture to Bob Dylan LPs that you thought you would never find anywhere.
Follow Mitropoleos Street to Aiolou Street. Turn right and a little later, turn right again onto Adrianou Street for about 500 meters – taking in the graphic scene – where you will turn left on Kydathinaion Street. If you need a coffee, you will find beautiful squares to meet your needs and if you continue 200 meters you will find the church of Metamorfosi tou Sotiros on your left – where you will take a left onto Nikis Street. Walking there, it wonąt be long before you find Ermou Street a few meter before Syntagma Square.
