Low temperatures alert the biological clock of bears, affect hunting
The bears in the "Arcturus" Sanctuary of Nymfaio, Florina, hibernated because the very low temperatures and the snow alerted their biological clock.
"The oldest bears first went to sleep followed by the younger ones who had come from the Zoo in Thessaloniki" Panos Stephanou from "Arcturus" said in recent public statements.
The shelter accommodates 15 bears while another four, that have not "slept", live in another shelter.
Also, nunting has been banned until January 18th, the Environment Ministry announced on Wednesday.
The ban was brought into force to protect endangered species – which have already suffered the impact of the cold weather this winter – from poachers amid reports of a spike in illegal hunting around the country.
Moreover, many migratory bird species have taken refuge in wetlands in southern Greece because of freezing conditions in the north of the country.
