NOTABLE MONUMENTS AND BUILDINGS

TEMPLE OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS (124-132 A.D.)
This the largest temple in all of Greece. It began being built by Peisistratus and took about 650 years to be completed. The temple had three rows of eight columns across the front and back of the temple and a double row of twenty on the flanks. From the 104 total Corinthian columns 17 meters in height, today only 15 have survived, but give a good indication of the measurement of the temple (96 x 40 m).

THE ARCH OF HADRIAN (131 A.D.)
The Roman Emperor, Hadrian, was a benefactor to the city of Athens. The Arch of Hadrian is the triumphal arch that is built out of Pendelic marble by Athenian hands in 131 A.D. on an ancient road that led from the old to the new Roman region of the city to honor Hadrian.

The architrave has two inscriptions which seem to have had the purpose of dictating the border between the Ancient and the Roman city. On the side facing the Acropolis it writes, “This is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus,” and on the other side is written, “This is the city of Hadrian and not of Theseus.”

THE TEMPLE OF THE DELPHINIAN APOLLO (500 B.C.)

THE LAW COURT AT THE DELPHINION (500 B.C.)

THE GATES OF THEMISTOKLEAN WALL (479/478 B.C.)

THE ROMAN VALANEION (Public baths) (124-132 A.D.)

THE SANCTUARY OF ZEUS PANHELLENIOS (131-132 A.D.)

THE TEMPLE OF CRONUS AND RHEA (150 A.D.)
