The admiration of the Romans for the culture of Athens resulted in benefits taking place and the city being able to quickly recover from the devastation caused by General Sulla. Notably, an important benefactor of Athens was Roman Emperor Hadrian.

Thus during the time of Roman occupancy, Athens remained an influential center of education and philosophy.


117-138 A.D.
Period of governance by the Roman Empire under Hadrian - who decorates Athens with works of architecture and art. Of particular significance are: The Arch of Hadrian, which separates the old city from the new; The Aqueduct; The Ancient Library; The Pantheon and The "Basilica" of Hadrian.


160 A.D.
Construction period of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, financed by the rich Athenian thinker Herodes Atticus.



267 A.D.
Total destruction of Athens by Herulians.
