USEFUL INFORMATION
THE GATE OF ATHENA ARCHEGETIS
The impressive Gate of Athena Archegetis lies on the west side of the Roman Agora. This entrance to the Agora is composed of four Doric columns and was built using Pendelic marble with the rest of the Agora around the 1st Century B.C.
It was constructed thanks to the contributions of Julius Caesar and Augustus and the people of Athens dedicated it to, whom else, their patron goddess Athena (11 B.C.).
The gate to the east was built during approximately the same time period, and was done in the Ionian style out of grey Ymittou marble.
