THE UNIFICATION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

The unification of archaeological sites is a major plan designed to promote the historical face of Athens. This idea has existed for about fifteen years or more (first thought of by Melina Mercouri). The two most recent governing bodies and official agencies – the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Public Works – proceeded on the elaboration and the materialization of the plan, in order to connect the previously separate archaeological sites of the historic center of Athens, thus creating a large archaeological park that heightens the historic image of the city while at the same time restoring it.

The major steps have been concluded and now Athens enjoys the fruits of this labor, which, taken under consideration the previous condition of these places, aims to restore the historical continuity of the Athenian inheritance. Because of this unification, many projects were completed and others are currently in progress to reorganize the capital. At the same time, emphasis has been given to increase the green areas that will result from the creation of pedestrian precincts.

The plan refers to the formation of a unified area of about 7.000 acres and almost 4 km in length from the Marble Panathenaic Stadium to Kerameikos (not the Plato Academy, as it was initially planned). The visitor may walk undisturbed from one end to the other, enjoying the route and visiting whatever area or monument he wishes.

A citizen of Athens has the opportunity to go by this zone while shopping in the pedestrian precincts of this historic triangle, (the network is directly connected with the heart of the commercial businesses of downtown Athens).
