ATHENS TOP 5 Museums
Rank 5: Benaki Museum
One of the great families of Modern Greek history, it was only natural that this institution would be built to enrich the material assets of the country. During his lifetime, Antonis Benakis made a great gift to the Greek State by donating his museum. Of equal importance was his continuous involvement, until his death in 1954, in enriching and improving the organization of the museum’s holdings, and his role in ensuring its financial security. It is also the oldest museum in Greece operating as a Foundation under Private Law. Its collections and general range of activities have become more extensive in the past decades. They include the art (of course), the conservation department, the information technology department, photographic services and more.
