TRAINS (OSE)

The train is the primarily fastest and most luxurious means of travel in the world, but in Greece this does not apply. This is due to the terrain of the main land which does not favor the rail network, and the bad image of trains that stop in every station portray, force the Greek to avoid the simple passenger trains.

Unfortunately this is not an exaggeration. The simple passenger trains of the Hellenic Railways Organisation (O.S.E.), regardless of their cheap fares, are old, gaudy and unreliable.

They run on one line, stop in every station and sometimes have to stop and wait for other trains to pass, in the middle of nowhere. Intercity gave a breath of fresh air to O.S.E. Intercity are modern trains, with international specifications, and offer quality services to the passengers. They are reliable and reach their destinations faster.

To board the Intercity, passengers have to pay an additional fee in addition to the regular train ticket. In this case, it is worth the cost, because the continuous improvements of the railways decrease the duration of a trip.

There are two Train Stations in Athens, and they both are in Kolonos: the Peloponnese Station (on Sidirodromon Street) and the Larisa Station (on Deligianni and Philadelphias Street).

The last one serve all of Greece, except the Peloponnese. Restorations of the stations – that came very close to each other – have been made, but they are small and they do not fit a capital like Athens…although they mirror the situation of the modern Greek trains.

Access to the stations is feasible by Metro (Larisa Station), urban bus (B5), trolley or taxi.
