Athens Buses & Trolleys

Athens Buses & Trolleys

The City of Athens has nearly 300 urban bus lines. They are capable of transporting passengers daily to every corner of the capital with a quality standard that has risen substantially in the past decades.

These buses that are frequently visible around Athens and its suburbs are blue and designated by 3-digit numbers. They are good for travel throughout the city and ideal for daytrips to Daphni and Kaisariani, the northern suburbs, Glyfada and the coastal southern suburbs, and other destinations in the greater Athens area.

With a long history and more than a total of 50 kilometers of their own lines on the streets of Athens, the urban buses and the trolleys have improved remarkably, not only in punctuality, but also in environmental quality during transportation.

One such measure is the preferential treatment of public transport along the road network, with the implementation of Dedicated Bus Lanes.

The major benefits from the operation of bus lanes are summarized as follows:

- Increase the speed of public transport to 23 km/h

- Improve the quality of public transport services offered, making it more attractive to passengers

- Increase in volumes of public transport passengers and reduction of the use of private vehicles

- Reduction of the consumption of fuel needed for public Transport

- Improvement of environmental conditions.
