The Breeder Gallery presents Chioma Ebinama's second solo exhibition at the gallery entitled The Eleventh House. The title refers to the Eleventh House of astrology which represents the house of collectivity, community and the human condition, the "home" of the visionary. Thus, the exhibition constitutes a vision of what the future could look like.

Ebinama draws from a wealth of visual references, ranging from the craft and ceremonial traditions of West Africa to the watercolors of the Indian subcontinent and the iconography of Japanese comics. He is interested in how archetypal images from the art, religions, and myths of different cultures—the visual culture of the common man—reflect a universal story of how we collectively navigate change, violence, beauty, prejudice, and heresy.

For the first time, Ebinama creates a series of carpets, handwoven from silk and wool. In these works she uses many of the recurring symbols that inhabit her personal visual universe: the eye (which looks inward and outward), the python (the messenger of Mami Wata) and the butterfly (the symbol of mortality and of the ephemeral). The carpets coexist in the exhibition with her works on paper. They are dominated by mysterious interiors and objects, where her protagonists could live.

The handmade rugs were created in collaboration with Art Rug Projects by Soutzoglou.

Chioma Ebinama is a Nigerian-American artist who works primarily in watercolor. He lives and works in Athens and is represented by Maureen Paley, London. Her practice also includes ceramics, sculpture and wearable art.
