About

The solo exhibition of Dimitris Kapetanos is presented at the Michalis Kakogiannis Foundation. The visual work entitled "braille" is on display.

It is an original space installation, which was created from interviews the artist received from three people with different levels of vision. The content of the interviews concerns the way in which these three people perceive colors. The first person is a 53-year-old woman with impaired vision, the second is a 25-year-old young man who can only recognize light and shadow tonally, while the third person is a 15-year-old teenager who was born blind, so he never saw colors.

People's speech was transcribed and the resulting texts were encoded into the braille system. This resulted in 12 aluminum signs, measuring 52 x 52 cm each, where each collects the answers of these three people for a color. In essence, the artist's concern was to create wall works that refer to color, and their content consists of texts written in the braille code, so that they cannot be read by anyone but those who know the code of the same name. In this way it is possible to use this system symbolically, and to cause confusion to the viewers when they see it. Through the awkward position they come from, they can perceive a multitude of issues that arise for people with visual impairment issues.

With this visual work, the visually impaired and the blind from birth, who know the system of writing and reading braille, for the first time have the opportunity to take the lead role and navigate thanks to the blind navigation markings placed on the floor - even unaccompanied - simply with the white cane, to stand on the appropriate indications and through touch to read the inscriptions and relay to the onlookers the opinions about the color of the three separate individuals.

The creator has made sure that all the braille signs are also available in the form of a book in the space, to serve people with disabilities who may also be blind, or even for children, who may not be facilitated by the height of the signs. Finally, he has provided for blind people who do not know the code, to have the narration in audio form, and also, since the code in the paintings is the Greek Braille script, he has made sure that there is a corresponding transcript in English as well.

The visual work "braille" received the 1st Prize "Mataroa" in the context of the 6th Art Thessaloniki in November 2022 and is expected to be exhibited at MOMus - Museum of Contemporary Art Thessaloniki, while it was presented with great success for the first time in October 2022 at the Arts Center of O.P.A.N.D.A.
