About

A grand performance of classical ballet is coming to Herodion. The ballet and orchestra of the National Opera of Odessa, in full composition, with 150 members, as part of its pan-European tour, is also coming to Athens to present the masterpiece of Ludwig Minkus "Don Quixote".

Ludwig Minkus' unsurpassed ballet work "Don Quixote" was first performed by Marius Petipa on December 26, 1869 from the Moscow Bolshoi Ballet and is one of the world's most popular classical works. In February 1933, she made her debut at the Odessa Opera House and then for almost a century the show underwent changes and upgrades and presented to the public a variety of choreographies highlighting the art of ballet in a unique way.

The case of "Don Quixote" is known from the famous novel of the same name by Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), one of the most famous works of world literature. The good-natured Alonso Quijano, having read many books about chivalry, seduced by their exploits, renounces his past. He chooses the name Don Quixote de la Mancha, takes Sancho Pancha as his servant and horseman and walks the paths of action, justice and truth, in search of adventure and a Dulcinea who lives only in his dreams.

The ballet, however, is based on one of the adventures of Don Quixote, which is included in the famous novel by Cervantes. The central theme is a specific episode in which the romance between the poor barber Basilio and the beautiful Kitri, daughter of the innkeeper Lorenzo, is described. This love is not liked by the girl's father, who wants to marry Kitri to a spoiled nobleman, Gamacho, and therefore does not accept poor Basilio as his son-in-law. Kitri flatly refuses to submit to her father's will and the two lovers manage to escape with a clever plan. Don Quixote, continuing his adventures, reaches the village of the two young people and after being dazzled by the beauty of the girl who for a moment thinks she is his "Dulcinea", he finally understands the power of the couple's love and decides to help the lovers with the altruism that distinguishes him in order to restore justice. But until that happens, the heroes of the show get involved in a Spanish fairy tale with wanderings in the Castilian countryside, gypsy dances, bullfighters, wandering musicians, magical dreams with wonderful fairies and druids and a special visit to the Duke's castle.

The Spanish Mediterranean temperament is interspersed with the magic of classical ballet and the inspiring music of Ludwig Minkus, who with "Don Quixote" and "Bagliandera", his two great successes, went down in the history of classical ballet as an accomplished creator of unique performances.
