About

The exhibition "Pera, by the hand of Akyla Milla" will present the main street of Pera in Constantinople, as it was until the middle of the last century. This is the first time that the handmade drawings of Akylas Millas will be presented on a large scale and in a scenography that allows the viewer to form a clear image of the most cosmopolitan and multicultural district of the city, in its most prosperous era.

Pera Street starts from Taksim Square, in the center of Istanbul and reaches Galata. Along the street there are a number of historical buildings of the 19th century, mainly in the neoclassical style, such as the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Sismanoglio Megaro, the Lyceum of Galata (one of the oldest educational institutions in the City) and the Catholic Church of Agios Anthony of Padua.

Akylas Millas (born 1934 in Polis) is a doctor, historian and writer. In his famous books, a rich collection of buildings, sealed documents and forms, mainly Asia Minor communities and parishes, is documented with photographic material and sketches. The Academy of Athens has honored Akylas Millas with the Halkoun Medal for his "general intellectual contribution".

The exhibition will "revive" buildings of both street frontages (about 500 meters long, to scale) in the artist's sketches. The exhibition will include additional audio-visual material from the wider region with rich historical, architectural and cultural interest. At the same time, miniatures of buildings of the famous historic street, specially printed to scale, on a 3D printer, will be exhibited.
