The Breeder gallery presents Hana Ward's first solo exhibition in Athens, entitled "While We Wait".

Hana Ward (Los Angeles, CA, 1989) creates works that explore themes of identity, introspection and self-transformation. Ethereal yet deeply introspective, Ward weaves together different moods, motivations, and narratives to portray black female figures who reflect and dream, building their worlds from the inside out. Her paintings juxtapose abstract figures against colorful backgrounds, drawing references from the dreamscapes of Matisse, Gauguin and Rousseau.

These representations of her protagonists' personal self-realization sometimes take place in the solitude of the home, and others are unleashed in outdoor landscapes. Influenced by anti-colonial stories, spiritual texts and the circular patterns found in nature, as well as the dominant narrative of art history, Ward's work draws out an inner dimension in order to reveal a world where subjects can dominate the 'here' ' and 'now.'

Ward places female figures in the foreground. Their posture and body language exude dynamism. The artist connects her female protagonists to a larger collective black consciousness, recognizing the power within. She says: "it's really all about empowerment. I think that's something that black women especially remember – their own inner spiritual strength. All my work is connected to Black liberation."
