1821 - 1833
Athens participates in the Greek War of Independence of 1821. On June 10th, 1822, the revolutionary
Greeks seize the Acropolis. On August 3, 1826, the Ottoman general Re?id Mehmed Pasha, also known as Ktah,
seizes Attica and Athens while at the same time, the citizens of Athens are barricaded in the Acropolis.
Numerous attempts to aid them result in failure. During one of these attempts, the Greek commander,
Georgios Karaiskakis, is killed. On May 24, 1827, after an agreement, the Acropolis is surrendered to
the Ottomans and the barricaded people are moved to nearby islands where they remain until the end of
the war under the Protocol of London in 1830.
