Architecture of Metro Line 1 (Green Line)

Nowadays, anyone who has a long time to use the old electrical train (the first line of Attica Metro) will be pleasantly surprised when they do.

Besides the Omonoia Station, which was the first one that was renewed in order to blend the architectural styles of the two rail networks that it hosted (Metro and H.S.A.P.), all of the stations have a completely different appearance.

In "Omonoia", beside the pictures of old Athens that are located on the surface of the Station, on the first boarding level there is the work "Oura" by Nikos Kessanlis – a very lively snapshot of the crowd that strolls the station, characteristic scene of life in Athens. But, because the urban life is certainly associated with the love for sports, the mural of "Footballers", by the artist, Pavlos, is a site to see here.

Spectacular changes were made to stops such as "Agios Nikolaos", "Petralona" and "Kato Patissia", while the renovations of "Piraeus", "Omonoia", "Monastiraki" and "Victoria" maintained their original character (even their plates), since these stations were declared preserved buildings by the Committee of Monument Conservation.

The embedded bed of the Eridanos River is one out of the most significant finds of the Monastiraki Station. Of course, the green tiles at Victoria Station still are very old looking and ghostlike, to honor the German builders that delivered the completed depot in 1949.
