Byzantine Period of Athens

The city gradually acquires a Christian, medieval structure. During the Byzantine years, Athens went through periods of both prosperity and decline.

The 11th and 12th Centuries stand out (also known as the golden times of Byzantine art in Athens) when the city experienced tremendous development.

The Byzantine Period ends with the occupation of the city by the Franks in connection to the 4th Crusade.
