Comicdom Con Athens

Comicdom Con Athens

Comicdom Con Athens, the most important comics festival in Greece, opened its gates to the public in 2006 and since then continues until today to attract the enthusiasts of Greece with the same intensity and more.

It is an annual 3-day fest that takes place simultaneously at the Hellenic American Union, the French Institute of Greece and outside on the nearby streets. Admission is free – usually amassing roughly over the 13,000 visitors – who enjoy a rich program of events and activities. At this fair, comic and sketch artists of all ages exhibit their personal creations, which are also up for sale. Moreover, in the same area, there is a Bazaar where one can find old collectible comic books, new publications, as well as figurines of various heroes from films and cartoons.

In addition to all of the above, people show great interest in the workshops, exhibitions, and projections of movies and documentaries taking place on the grounds. The workshops not only involve sketching or "making" comic pieces from well-known artists of the genre, but some of them aim exclusively at children and their parents - who want to enjoy their tour of Comicdom but also want their children to participate in some of the magic of the scene. At the exhibitions, you will find creations, some of which are presented for the first time to the Greek audience, mainly by international artists and in collaboration with foreign universities specializing in comics and sketching.

However, those of you simply want to have the opportunity to enjoy favorite movies such as Batman v.s. Superman: Dawn of Justice or Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie or documentaries that focus mainly on your favorite fantasy movies and animated films you must make your way to the projections area.

Comicdom – as all festivals – has special guest panels of both Greek and world-renowned artists. They include the acclaimed Eagle Award, Irish designer Declan Shalvey (Moon Knight, Injection); the Danish designer Peter Snejbjerg, known for for titles by major American publishers like "The Books of Magic" and "Starman"; the award-winning, Richard McGuire creator of the influential story "Here" and collaborator of "The New Yorker"; and of course the British Charlie Adlard, the creator of "The Walking Dead" comic series that inspired one of the greatest phenomena of modern pop culture and triggered global zombie-mania.

Notably, Comicdom's trademark concerns 2 contests: first is the Comicdom Cosplay contest in which heroes from across the spectrum of pop culture come alive on stage, with the winner representing the country at the EuroCosplay European competition at MCM EXPO in London. Secondly, the award of the Greek Comics Awards where the best Greek comic creators of the previous year are awarded.

Do not forget that, regardless of the contest, you will meet cosplayers all the days of the festival. Do not be surprised if you suddenly see the Hulk talking to Spider-Man in front of you. But all importantly, make an effort to come dressed as your favorite hero too!
