George Papanikolaou

The famous Greek doctor, biologist and researcher, George Papanikolaou, was born in Kymi, Evvoia, on 13th March 1833. He studied Medicine at the University of Athens and, in 1907, he went to Germany where he attended biology lessons given by the Professors Haikel and Wieseman.

In 1923, George Papanikolaou applied his method on women to study their natural genital organ functions and, afterwards, for the diagnosing of cancer of the uterus.

This method that was named in honor after him as the, "Papanikolaou Method", or, "Papanikolaou Test" / "Pap Test", and opened new horizons specifically for cancer detection. George Papanikolaou died on 19th February 1962 in Miami, USA.
