Greece - the country in numbers
Greece has a national territory of 131,957 km² and according to the 2011 census, the country has 10,727,000 inhabitants. Of the 3,054 islands (representing over 80% of all islands in the Mediterranean Sea), 113 are permanently inhabited.
There are 13 administrative regions in Greece: Attica, Central Greece, Central Macedonia, Crete, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Epirus, Ionian Islands, North Aegean, Peloponnese, South Aegean, Thessaly, Western Greece, and Western Macedonia.
The capital Athens is located in Attica and together with all the suburbs, it has over 4 million inhabitants. The second-largest city, with over one million inhabitants, is Thessaloniki and is located in Central Macedonia. Patras, the third-largest city of the country, is located in the region of Western Greece and has over 300,000 inhabitants.
