Lakes nearby Athens

The surroundings of Attica are hilly and mountainous but has few rivers and lakes, unlike other regions in Greece such as Central Greece, Macedonia or Ipiros. However, 2 lakes near Athens are particularly worth seeing: Lake Vouliagmenis at the southern edge of the city, and Lake Marathona in the north of Attica.

Swimming in a lake is different from swimming in the sea. The water feels much softer, it smells different and you can relax in a more unique way. The quality of the bathing water of the lakes is, by the way, very often controlled by the health authorities, the best example being the "Blue Flags Beaches" listing.
