Marathon Lake & Dam

Marathon Lake & Dam

The artificial lake of Marathon is a lake created in 1926 for the purpose of collecting water for the water supply of Athens. It was formed by the erection of the Marathon Dam at the junction of the streams of Haradrou and Barnaba and a few kilometers from the town of Marathona of Attica.

The Marathon Dam was completed in 1929 covering about 10 km². Marathon Lake was the main reservoir of water for the Athens water supply since 1931, when it began to provide water until 1959. In 1959, a supply connection started from Lake Yliki and since 1981 most water for the water supply of the Greek capital comes from the artificial lake of Mornos.

Nowadays all the water of Lake Marathon would only be sufficient for a few days of water supply in Athens.
