Private Colleges in Athens

Private Universities or Colleges in Greece are establishments that are classified depending on whether they are for profit or not, and whether their degrees are accredited, validated, or neither.

Descriptions of the types, the lawful status, and the academic standing can be classed as either Non-profit institutions that are accredited by a foreign State; or Non-profit institutions that are not accredited by a foreign State or validated by an alien academy; or For-profit institutions that honor degrees validated by an out-of-country university; or, lastly, Distance learning support associations (For-profit and Non-profit).

Nevertheless, the current Constitution of Greece restricts private institutions for post-secondary education, from functioning as autonomous universities. Colleges circumvent this regulation by establishing cooperation with foreign universities to present undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The quality of education at private universities is not controlled by the Hellenic State and is under varying levels of management from alien accreditation bodies and validating universities. Hence, the quality of instruction, research, libraries, computing facilities, pupil support, organization, etc. differs dramatically from one school to another. Some private universities offer a better educational experience than State universities, while others are sufficiently beneath the university level. Most (if not all) of these establishments operate mainly utilizing the English language.
