Sauna & Hammams in Athens

Looking to savor a sublime sweat? Athens has a number of locations for the enjoyment of a good old sauna or a traditional Hammam. We may feel body cramps after intense exercising or after minor injuries.

With the sauna, all muscles relax, because of the intense dry heat (which can get as high as 185° F) and sweating (nearly a pint per sitting) involved. Skin temperature soars to about 104° F within minutes.

Afterward, you feel that your skin is softer and the pores totally cleansed. The pulse rate jumps by 30% or more, allowing the heart to nearly double the amount of blood it pumps each minute. If indeed, you decide to offer this gift to yourself often, you will fight stress, improve your immune system and naturally burn many calories and fat by increasing your metabolism. However, saunas can also pose serious risks. Knowledge will help to avoid them! Avoid touching hot surfaces to prevent burns. Also, the water of the sauna is not drinkable. So if you feel thirsty, bring a bottle of water at regular room temperature. Finally, it is wrong to think that this activity, in itself, can be a sole weight loss agent.

Popularly known as a "Turkish Bath", a Hammam differs greatly from a sauna. A lot of people misdescribe a Turkish bath by saying it is the same as a sauna but with water. They do not point out the most important aspect, which is exfoliation of the body. The masseur will soap you from head to foot, and then run a loofah all over you. Don’t be surprised at the amount of dead skin that falls off even if you do shower every morning. The dead skin resembles the rubber shavings when you have run an eraser over some pencil writing. Please note not to go for a Hammam towards the end of your holiday because you will rub off your suntan. Equally, remember that after a Turkish Bath, the skin is new and not accustomed to the sun so it is more susceptible to burn.
