Wine Labels from Greece

In Greece, the main wine regions are Peloponnese, Santorini, Crete, Euboea, Central Greece, Macedonia, and Thrace. Major growing areas are also in the Aegean and the Ionian Sea, the Dodecanese, and Thessaly.

It's not only crucial to enable wine lovers to taste rare wines at affordable prices. It is also vital to show how the Hellenic vineyard can and should be considered a valuable member of the wine production field, on the international level.

With that being said, it is no surprise that the country boasts hundreds of wine producers throughout. Here we want to give you a good "taste" of what experts and judges say are the best out of several thousand Greek wines that have flushed through their glasses most recently. Their preferences are measured by the purchases and ratings in Greece. The best of them is selected, both in terms of quality and value for money and their availability to the general public.

Prominent wine labels in Greece:

Cuvee Monsignori Estate Argyros
Santorini's Cuvee Monsignori Estate Argyros is presumably the most emblematic presentation of the island and has been hailed as the Best Greek Wine of 2021. Its unique name is not random as Monsignori was the nickname they used for the old vineyards on the isle. These "ungrafted, pre-phylloxera and over 200 years old vines", from the oldest vineyard of Santorini, in Episkopi, are the base of Cuvee Monsignori. Concentration, superb expressiveness, and tremendous aging potential make this wine positively mind-blowing.

Bucephale Ktima Ligas
Bucephale is the pride of the Ligas family, a wine made only in outstanding vintages and one of the first wines they created, with the ruler of the region, Xinomavro. The aged vines gave their most concentrated fruit and then the wine fermented with ambient yeasts and matured for 18 months in French, oak barrels. It is bottled unfiltered and without any other intervention, in the context of mild natural vinification. Notably, the limited quantity is bought before it is even bottled and exported to the best restaurants in the world.

Xinomavro Reserve Estate Alpha
Xinomavro Reserve Vieilles Vignes Alpha Estate is one of the few Greek wines that aim high with its elevated ratings and international accolades. The Barba Giannis vineyard with old, pre-phylloxera vines, planted in 1919, gives its best fruit for world-class wine. Evidently, it has ranked in the top 10 for successive years.

Ftelos Santorini Artemis Karamolegos Winery
Santorini Ftelos comes from a single vineyard in Fira, with 150 (+) years old vines. They have hardened due to drought, strong winds, and nutrient-poor soil and offer little but over-concentrated grapes for Ftelos. The wine fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks, with its fine wine lees, for 1 year, followed by maturation for 2 months in oak tanks, to enrich its complexity. One of the most outstanding Santorini's out there.

Le Roi des Montagnes Cuvee Papargyriou Winery
Rated #1, this "King of the Mountains" has been on his throne for years and as it seems, it will be very difficult to dethrone him! The special blend of Yiannis Papargyriou from Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, and Mavrodafni, late harvest, gives lessons of concentration and complexity. Anyone who tries it once is condemned to treasure it eternally!
