14 trains of metro line 1 (electric) to be modernized

A complete renovation and upgrade is expected to take place in the trains of the former electric railway with the completion of the phase of the tender for the upgrade of the vehicles of line 1 of the metro.

The contractor of the tender is Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles SA, which prevailed over Alstom, according to an article in Kathimerini.

The bids were unsealed on December 8th, 2021 and were evaluated by the STASY Tender Committee.

According to what is written in the text of the competition and always according to the newspaper, the windows and the seats will be replaced, while the air conditioning system will be maintained, a new floor and side walls will be installed.

In addition, LED lighting, new closed circuit cameras and public information screens are expected to be installed.

The contractor will undertake to deliver the 14 trains of the 8th receipt, which entered the traffic between 1983-1985, fully upgraded and capable of productive operation for the next 25 years from the completion of the contract.

At the same time, the trains will be accessible to the disabled, while the installation of seat belts for wheelchairs is also planned.

The modernization of the 14 trains is expected to lead to the significant strengthening of the line 1 fleet.

The delivery time of the contractual object is set at 34 months from the date of signing the contract.

However, the delivery of the trains will be done in parts, with the first renovated train being delivered within 19 months from the signing of the contract.

Then, as agreed, another 4 in 25 months, 5 more in 30 months and the remaining 4 in 34 months will be delivered.

The estimated value of the contract is € 70 million excluding VAT.

The project has been expected for a long time and is going to upgrade the overall transportation experience with the trains of the former electric railway.

The new trains will be upgraded in a way that is very reminiscent of the trains of the other two metro lines (2 and 3), which are much younger than those of line 1 (formerly ISAP).
