In terms of rainfall, Epirus regained the lead after 3 years, with the meteorological station in Theodoriana Artas recording an annual rainfall of 3,761 millimeters, a value that constitutes an annual rainfall record for all stations in the network of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr in its 15 years of operation. They were followed by Paramythia of Thesprotia (2,969 mm), Lepiana of Arta (2,569) and Derviziana of Ioannina (2,569).
The lowest annual precipitation heights were found in the Cyclades, South Crete and the Dodecanese. The drought record for 2021 is held by Schinoussa (only 186 mm of rain), followed by Ierapetra (205), Ios (211), Moiras Heraklion (212), Mykonos (219), Anafi (223) and Nisyros (225).
In terms of temperatures, 2021 was another warm year for most regions of the country, during most months, culminating in the extreme heat wave of July 26-August 10. This is the longest heatwave ever to hit the country and one of the most powerful.
According to the records, a very large number of temperature records were set across the country, while more than 250 stations in the EAA-meteo network recorded maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
The record high temperature for 2021 was recorded in Makrakomi (46.3 degrees on 2/8/21) followed by Arfara Messinia (46.1 on 3/8), Stylida (45.9 on 3/8), Kranidi Argolida (45.8 on 3/8) and Sparta (45.7 on 3/8).
The lowest temperatures of the year were recorded mainly during the bad weather "Medea" between 15-17 February, bad weather which, in addition to extremely low temperatures, was accompanied by heavy snowfalls in the east and north of the country. In fact, in Attica and Athens there were significant damages to infrastructure and networks due to the weight of the snow.
The low temperature record (excluding ski resorts and dolines) was recorded in New Caucasus of Florina (-25.1 on 16/2/21) followed by Ptolemaida (-20.4 on 17/2), Mesovouno of Kozani (-19.9 on 15/2), Kozani Valley (-19.9 on 17/2) and Florina (-19.4 on 16/2).
Even lower were the minimum temperatures recorded in 2021 at weather stations located in sinkholes. On 23/12 in the sinkhole of Bathystallos Parnassos at an altitude of 1,780 meters, a minimum temperature of -27.9 degrees Celsius was recorded.
Of all the bad weather that occurred in the country in 2021, names were given to six: Leandros (14-18/1/2021), Medea (15-17/2/2021), Athena (6-11/10/2021), Ballos (14-16/10/2021), Mediterranean Cyclone Nearchos (28-31/10/2021) and Carmel (17-19/12/2021), while there were also two unnamed bad weather events on 26-30/11/2021 and 9-11/12/2021.
