The building where Maria Callas once lived is being extensively renovated and will house the "Maria Callas Academy of Lyrical Art". The restoration of the historic building, was announced at a press conference organized by the President of the Maria Callas Academy of Lyrical Art, Vasso Papantoniou, by the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis.

The Municipality of Athens is taking the first important step for its restoration, by launching the tender for the implementation of the project at the beginning of the year through the company "Athens Regeneration".

The building of approximately 1,500 sq.m. is a listed building of exceptional architecture and aesthetics, of Jugendstil type, in which Callas lived with her family from 1937, returning from America where she was born and lived her childhood, until 1945. It is a real gem in the heart of Athens.

The Mayor of Athens embraced from the very first moment the vision of housing the Maria Callas Academy of Lyrical Art in the building at 61 Patision Street, which for many years the President of the Academy of Lyrical Art of the same name, soprano Vasso Papantoniou, had been trying to realize.

"It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, worthy of the best building in cities like Paris, London or Rome. This building - for too long abandoned to time and decay - evoked mixed feelings. Although associated with the glamour of Callas, its image did not correspond to what it should have been. Today, we are proceeding with its revitalization, with the aim of giving it its second glorious period", the Mayor of Athens said, underlining: "The tender documents are ready, we have managed to secure full funding and early next year, the tender will be announced."
