According to the Hellenic Ministry of Education and university officials, more than 100 joint programs were agreed, ranging from semester-long exchange programs to joint masters and PhD programs, with supervising faculty from both institutions, to joint undergraduate degrees; the latter are the hardest to plan.
Ioannis Papapolymerou, chairperson of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University, announced joint degree programs with 2 Greek universities.

Representatives from 30 American universities – including top-flight schools like Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Columbia, Brown and Johns Hopkins – are in Greece these days exploring new partnerships and strengthening already existing ties with local institutions, thanks to the U.S. Department of State, the Government of the Hellenic Republic of Greece and the Institute of International Education (IIE) that implemented the Pharos Summit 2022: Greek – U.S. Collaboration in Higher Education, in the framework of the International Academic Partnership Program (IAPP) Greece.
Starting last Saturday and running through Tuesday in Athens, this unique initiative provides delegates with the opportunity to promote greater cooperation and collaboration in international educational exchanges.
The trip is about to last until November 12 and will include visits to many places such as except for Athens, Thessaloniki, Crete, Thrace among others and a high-level forum with rectors from more than 20 Greek universities.
The history making delegation of 30 US educational institutions showcases the strength and significance of US Greek educational partnerships and people to people ties.
Prime Minister K. Mitsotakis participated in the opening event at Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre addressed greetings underlining that many of these collaborations have already been agreed and more will be agreed in the future, expressing his certainty that “there is real potential for the enhancement of academic ties between the two countries”.
As he explained there is no better place than Greece for US Universities that wish to extend their activity to other parts of the world, noting that Greece in 2022 was very different to Greece in 2012 or Greece in 2015, adding that the country “is a workshop of constant change”.
The Ministry of Education Mrs. Kerameus and the U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Mr. George Tsunis welcomed the US delegates underscoring the commitment to deepening ties and cooperation.
Study in Greece, as the national agency for the internationalization of Greek Higher Education, also participated in this event of major importance for Greek Higher Education.
SiG’s Project Manager Professor Christos Michalakelis stressed the importance of the extroversion and internationalization of Greek HEIs, and presented SiG’s actions, mission and goals that contribute to this national endeavor.
