Ophthalmiatreio

Ophthalmiatreio

The building that houses the Ophthalmology Clinic of Athens is a rare example of romantic structure of Byzantine style in the country.

The central building consists of the basement and the ground floor (first phase 1847-1854) and the roof level (second phase 1869). The outpatient building is located in the ground floor (1914-16).

This was the original work of the architect, Christian Hansen. Architect, Lyssandros Kaftatzoglou, made some modifications such as the entrance with two columns. In 1869 architect, Gerasimos Metaxas, made the extension of 6.50 meters to the north side and the addition of the first floor.

During 1914-16 the building on Sina Street was built, the outpatient building, by the engineer, Aristidis Balanos. In 1992 there was an approval for research of restoration and preservation of the Ophthalmiatreio building.
