Temple of Athena Nike
The Temple of Athena Nike, located nearby the Propylaia, was built during 427-424 B.C. in memory of the victory of the Athenians over the Persians. Architect was Kallikrates, who chose to place it on a tower 9,5 meters high.
The position was used as observation post, but also as a worshiping place for Athena Nike, with embossed decoration on the marble protecting parapet that surrounded the tower.
The temple is of Ionian order with columns on two sides, four pillars on the east and four on the west side. The embossed frieze on the top depicted assembly of the gods on its east side and various battles on all the other sides.
