Rank 3: Byzantine Museum

Hosting both permanent and temporary collections, the Byzantine Museum is by far one of the most important museums in the country. It holds 30,000 works of art such as icons, sculptures, ceramics, ecclesiastical textiles, paintings, jewelries and architectural elements (wall paintings and mosaics). The permanent exhibition is divided in two main parts: The first is devoted to Byzantium (4th -15th c. AD) and contains 1200 artifacts and the second entitled “From Byzantium to the mMdern Ea” presents 1500 artworks dating from the 15th to 20th Century. The most recent exhibition taking place now is: The Duchess of Plaisance: The History Behind the Myth from 17 December 2010 until 13 February 2011.
