About

Moirolói is a purely musical narrative around mourning and mourning ritual. One of the monumental European musical masterpieces, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem (KV 626) meets 19th century continental obituaries.

The "open marriage" of these two musical worlds, together with complementary elements from the English Renaissance, the early Baroque (Dowland, Purcell, Heindel) and the Byzantine organ, orchestrates a sonically transcendent experience that transforms the ritual of death into a celebration of the life. The Moirolói draws inspiration from the macabre dance (Danse Macabre), the liturgical texts of the Orthodox funeral procession and the ancient Greek obituary with its modern instrumental and vocal conjugations, which are still played/sung today in the mountains of Epirus.

Under the musical direction of Giorgos Ziavras, musicians from different cultural backgrounds come together: musicians from Greece specializing in traditional music, singers from all over Europe who form the Choros, as well as instrumentalists from Greece and abroad who all together compose the orchestra.
