About

A great and unique artist, in the broad field of contemporary world music, with five GRAMMY Awards in her possession and thirteen albums to her credit, Angelique Kidjo is an iconic image for the historical development of socio-political and cultural Africa today.

All the artistic / creative approaches of this special singer / songwriter and activist from Benin are directed, almost from the beginning, towards both her historical heritage and her transnational visibility in the present day. In short, as the South African Miriam Makeba (Angelique's name) did in other times, so Kidjo embraces her roots both through tradition and through jazz, soul, rock and other musical expressions that make her international music.

Living and growing up in the former Dahomey, Angelique experienced the West African musical tradition but equally received the strong waves of rock and soul through Jimi Hendrix, Santana, James Brown and others, thus finding her own expressive path that she developed and perfected it with studies in Paris and with her participation in Jasper van't Hof's great world jazz group Pili Pili. This until the turn of the 90s, when the collaboration with Island Records opened the way for her and launched her career.

Capitalizing on her family artistic tradition, her great talent and her cultural / social consciousness, Angelique Kidjo very soon acquired the status of a true world diva "infiltrating" many different artistic fields through collaborations with top artists including Bono, Peter Gabriel, Carlos Santana, Sting, Philip Glass, Ziggy Marley. And her rich discography, from the late 80s to the present day, consists of albums that are real diamonds and that each of them embraces some special aspect of the human art called music.

Angelique Kidjo cultivates a music and an art that moves equally in the space of her own native African tradition as well as her acquired transnational perception and that every day expands and enriches. Her live performances are characterized by endless energy and interaction, always offering a positive and optimistic message to the audience.

Her concert at the SNFCC is part of her 40-year European tour that begins in Paris in October and ends at Carnegie Hall in November 2024.
