About

On Thursday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m., the Ghika Art Gallery Shop will present the exhibition of ceramist Eleni Kanellopoulou as part of the series of presentations "The Showcase of Kriezotou. An artist proposes.". The exhibition will last until May 14, 2024.
The exhibition is entitled "If you don't find spring, you make it", a title inspired by the poetic work of Elytis "Ek tou Plision".

Working with red baked clay, wax and earthenware, Eleni composes an orgiastic spring scene in the showcase of Kriezotou 3. She paints with pyrochromes, freely, effortlessly. Roses, poppies and lemons intermingle with foliage on the clay, in ever-repeating patterns, which give her work an automatic handwriting that is completely recognizable.

A tireless ceramic worker from a young age, Kanellopoulou, at 72 today, proudly declares that she is self-taught. She no longer deals with the wheel (the forms of her ceramics are made by a partner of the wheel maker in Maroussi), but she prepares her tools herself - an improvised "arsenal" of brushes, sponges, poire, and improvises with quick, almost anxious strokes on the ceramic surfaces. In her home-workshop, she paints, glazes and fires at a relatively low temperature (1025-1040 °C), preferring the traditional way used in the Mediterranean (instead of the stoneware technique), surrounded by hundreds of samples, all in vivid colors and floral motifs .

Inventive and productive, she has connected her career with the Benaki Museum Shop, where her ceramics have been loved and sold for 20 years.

After studying biology, Eleni Kanellopoulou studied in traditional ceramics workshops. Today she maintains her own workshop. He is a member of the Hellenic Chamber of Visual Arts, has organized individual exhibitions and has been distinguished with praise at the Panhellenic Exhibition in 1984. He makes utilitarian and decorative objects using traditional techniques with modern, durable and non-toxic materials.
