The name Mykonos means a mass of stones or a rocky area. According to tradition, the name of the island derives from a hero by the name of Mykonos, the son of the King of Delos, Anios, who was the son of Apollo and nymph Rhoio - a descendent of Dionysus. In Mykonos worshipped gods Dionysus, Demeter, Neptune and Apollo.

The capital of the island is Chora (or Mykonos town), located on the western side of the island. In order to access the island, ferries are departing daily from Piraeus port (journey duration 5 hours), or speedboats (journey duration 3 hours). Also, you may depart from Rafina port (speedboat 2 1/2 hours) or by airplane daily from Athens Airport (flight time 35 minutes).

The major popular areas of the island are: Mykonos Town (Chora), Platis Gialos, Ornos, Psarou, Panormos, Agios Stefanos, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis, Agios Ioannis, Ano Mera and Tourlos.

The main attractions of the island are: famous "Little Venice", island's beautiful windmills, Church of Panagia Paraportiani, Panayia Tourliani Monastery, Palaiokastro Monastery, Petros the Pelican (island's mascot), the Folklore Museum, Lena's House Museum, Aegean Maritime and Archaeological Museum, Agricultural Museum, The Boni Mill, Kalafatis-Divounia, where are preserved traces of prehistoric (early cycladic) era, Zoodohos Piyi (Cathedral), Churches Saint Kyriaki, Saint Nikolaos Saint Eleni, Municipal Library and Art Gallery, Town Hall of Mykonos, Tria Pigadia, Drafaki, the Mycenaean tholos tomb, the Tower of Platis Gialos, Our Lady of the Rosary and the Roman Catholic church.

Mykonos municipality includes islands of Delos and Renia. Delos, the sacred famous island of Apollo, is a sacramental island of the ancient Greek. In the archaeological museum and site of Delos, one of the most important in Greece, are exhibited mosaics, statues, inscriptions and sculptures.
