The Jazz Chronicles continue in 2023 to invite and challenge musical exploration, focusing on jazz as "the music of now", with three new concerts starting from different regions of the modern jazz geography to meet at the KPSN Lighthouse. On Sunday February 5th, at 21.00 Martha Mavroidi returns to the SNFCC to introduce us to her new quartet, 5 albums and 14 years after her debut, which caused a sensation in Greece and abroad with its special mix of folk and jazz elements. With the release of her first album, The Garden of Rila (2009), she was called a "rising star of Balkan music". Following her career, she traveled to Greece, Europe and the USA, collaborated with names such as Savvina Giannatou and Eliza Carthy, while also directing the traditional choir "Pomegranate". In the new composition of her quartet, she collaborates with 3 other musicians who come from the wider field of improvisational music, together with whom she composes a special sound that combines the aroma of the Balkans and the Middle East with the exotic elements of the Eastern Mediterranean and jazz harmonies. Somewhere between East and West, traditional and modern music, the piano, the double bass, the drums, the electric lute and the voice of Mavroida constitute a special, unique proposal without geographical barriers and sonic influences The quartet consists of Yiannis Papadopoulos (piano), Giorgos Ventouris (double bass), Dimitris Klonis (drums) and Martha Mavroide (voice and electric lute).   *The event is part of the donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). Alongside the majority of its events which are organized with free admission thanks to SNF donations, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center also organizes some events with an affordable ticket, enriching its sources of income and ensuring its financial sustainability. Venue: SNFCC KPSN "Lighthouse" at 21:00. Tickets should be booked in advance, at www.ticketservices.gr.

Moreover, the pedestrianised area beneath the Acropolis, in the ancient neighborhood of Thissio, will come alive with live music, DJ sets, performers, and a birds-eye view of the Acropolis as it is lit up at midnight by α magnificent fireworks display. A fun, free family-friendly atmosphere. Nearby, the exploration and trekking company Next Destination is hosting its third Philopappou Hill trek on New Year’s Eve. It is a free event taking the public to the summit of the central Athens hill in time for the various fireworks displays that are so well showcased from there. The group will meet at 21:30 at the statue of Theseus outside Thiseio metro station and the trek starts at 22:00. Participants are advised to wear or bring a flashlight and to dress against the evening chill. For clubbing fun, 11 DJs playing back-to-back sets promise as many hours of foot-numbing dancing at the Athens Conservatory’s (Rizari & Vassileos Constantinou) New Year’s Eve bash. Doors open at 22:00 and tickets are available online at viva.gr or by phone at 11876. Furthermore, as every year, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) wears its festive clothes and welcomes the public for the change of time. The New Year's Eve program opens at 22:30 Jerome Kaluta and his Big Band with a unique concert of soul and funk hits. Time changes with a spectacular fireworks show that will light up the Attic sky, while, in the first minutes of the new year, the starting signal is given for the first race of the year, the now established "SNF RUN: 2023 FIRST RUN" of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). Afterwards, a big party is set up in the Agora with the Italian DJ Beppe Loda. The impressive choreography of the Fountains in the Canal could not be missing from the program. The hostess of the glamorous celebration is the actress Nadia Kontogeorgi. At the same time, the Ice Rink and Stavros Niarchos Park remain open, only for this evening, until 02.00 in the morning for those who want to welcome the new year by making figures on the ice or playing with the impressive Lighting Installations. Balloons for the children, treats and many more surprises complete the New Year's Eve scene at the SNFCC. The festive program of the SNFCC will be broadcast live on ERT2 and on the snfcc.org website. All New Year's Eve events are held with free admission thanks to the exclusive donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).   The New Year's Eve program at the SNFCC - Jerome Kaluta & Big Band Just before the turn of time, the explosive Jerome Kaluta takes the stage at the Agora with his 10-piece Big Band for a concert of the greatest soul and funk hits that bring the Motown era into today. All time classic hits by James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Manu Dubango, Curtis Mayfield, Aretha Franklin, Blues Brothers and many more legendary artists invite us to dance on the best night of the year. -DJ set: Beppe Loda With the arrival of 2023, Agora welcomes the legendary Beppe Loda in a surprise DJ set with disco as its main component. A pioneer of the Afro movement in the mid ʽ80s in Northern Italy and the main DJ of the now legendary club Typhoon, Beppe Loda is considered by many to be one of the most influential and eclectic DJs of the last 30 years. He experimented by seamlessly mixing various genres of music that had never been heard before on the dancefloor worldwide - such as funky, afro, kraut, weird electronics, post wave, Brazilian music and obscure disco - thus creating a hybrid that later prevailed as cosmic. His presence is constant in the best clubs and festivals around the world and his DJ sets at MOMA's PS1 are described by many as simply "mythical". -SNF RUN: 2023 FIRST RUN The first race of the year starts at 00:04, just after the time change and the spectacular fireworks show and covers a 3km course. This year's race has a special significance, as 2023 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Spyros Louis, the First Marathon Runner, at the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens. To mark this anniversary, commemorative cups will be awarded to the first and first finishers. The race has a charitable character again this year. With the amount of money that will be collected from the symbolic participation cost (minimum subscription 5 Euros), two non-profit organizations that dedicate their work to children will be supported: Karkinaki and SVOURENIO KDAPAmeA of the Municipality of Kos. -Light and Water dance! Like every New Year's Eve, the SNFCC Christmas World reaches the height of its brilliance with a spectacular display of fireworks, but also with choreography from the Fountains on the Canal. The Fountains also welcome the new year with bright choreographies and invite us to enjoy an unforgettable spectacle with favorite melodies. Further information can be found at snfcc.org/NYE and on the @SNFCC social media pages.   For a more concise look at New Year's Eve events in Athens, visit our pages at: https://www.athens24.com/athens-clubbing-events.html https://www.athens24.com/athens-concerts-stage-events.html https://www.athens24.com/athens-pistes-events.html

The world’s premier psychedelic soul band, Monophonics, cordially invites you to attend the grand re-opening of the once thriving, once vibrant establishment, the legendary Sage Motel. A place where folks experience the highs and lows of human existence. A place where big dreams and broken hearts live, where people arrive without ever knowing how they got there. It’s where individuals find themselves at a crossroads in life. What started as a quaint motor lodge and a common pitstop for travelers and truckers in the 1940s morphed into a bohemian’s hang by the 1960s and 1970s. Artists, musicians, and vagabonds of all types would stop there as seedy ownership pumped obnoxious amounts of money into high end renovations, eventually attracting some of the most prominent acts of the era. But when the money ran out, The Sage Motel devolved into a place where you rent by the hour. Sage Motel, Monophonics’ fifth studio album since 2012, tells its story. Once again produced by brilliant bandleader Kelly Finnigan, the album captures a timeless sound that blends heavy soul with psych-rock. With their previous album, It’s Only Us, selling over 10,000 physical units and garnering over 20 million streams, Monophonics have built a reputation over the past decade as one of the most impactful bands in the country. If these walls of the Sage Motel could talk, this is what they’d say. So join us as we examine where the stories are told and experiences unfold…..and sink into a soft pillow of soulful psychedelia…..down at the Sage Motel. Warpaint, the leading single from Sage Motel, reveals the vices of each resident and confronts the struggles of substance abuse and addiction. Their warpaint becomes compulsory to face the day, tolerate the struggle, get through the hardest parts of the world, humanity, life and to fight the good fight. Cloaked in heavy riffs and robust vocals, Warpaint gives you the first look through the doors of the Sage Motel. The tour heads off on September 1st at Technopolis (100 Pireos, Gazi) in Athens, before heading to Kavala’s Akontisma venue on September 2nd, then the Thessaloniki Beer Festival on September 3rd, the Lab Art Yard in Volos on September 5th after that, and lastly the old slaughterhouse in Patra on September 6th, 2022. Tickets can be booked online at www.viva.gr or by phone at 11876.

It is an improvised concept created in 2018 in collaboration with Tony Allen, Afro Jazz legend and drummer of Fela Kuti. It would not be an exaggeration to state that without Jeff Mills, electronic music would likely be a very different scenery today. From the legendary music collective “Underground Resistance” he co-founded back in 80s Detroit, to world critical and commercial recognition, working with symphony orchestras or delivering art and fashion projects, Jeff Mills has led an enviable, idiosyncratic artistic course through the years. Much more than just a producer or a DJ, Mills is a true sound artist with a complete vision and deep knowledge of his field, which he expresses through his own record label Axis, which he founded in 1992, as well as with countless other highly creative projects. In 2000 he wrote the soundtrack for Fritz Lang’s silent masterpiece, “Metropolis”. In 2006 he released “Blue Potential”, a live recording with the 70-piece Montpelier Symphonic Orchestra. In 2008 his piece “Critical Arrangements” was part of the “Le Futurisme à Paris – Une Avant-Garde Explosive” exhibition at Centre Pompidou Paris. His 2013 album “Where Light Ends” was inspired by Japanese astronaut Mamoru Mohri. These are but a few stops in the career of an iconic, ever evolving artist. 12 years after his last performance in Athens, Jeff Mills will be taking over the iconic Ancient Greek Theater Odeon of Herodes Atticus to present his acclaimed jazz afro futurism project. Accompanied by his close partner Jean-Phi Dary on keyboards, he will be also joined by Divinity Roxx on bass as well as flutist Rasheeda Ali. Set on the most iconic of venues this will most certainly be a night to remember.   Info: Jeff Mills Presents: Tomorrow Comes the Harvest feat. Jean-Phi Dary, Divinity Roxx & Rasheeda Ali Tuesday, July12th at 21:00. Tickets start at 28 Euros at: aefestival.gr, viva.gr, and public.gr.
