The exhibition, which opened to the public late last month, marks the centennial of Maria Callas’ birth and is based on a broad selection of items put together by collector Dimitris Pyromallis. Having met Maria Callas by chance in the island of Zakynthos at the age of 4, Pyromallis devoted his life to this collection on the art of Maria Callas from the age of 20. Pyromallis recently donated the collection to the Greek National Opera Archive, including some 4,000 vinyl records, 6,000 CDs, hundreds of books, newspaper clippings, periodicals, thousands of photographs, autographs, handwritten notes, postage stamps featuring Callas’ likeness from various countries, medals minted in her honour, and some of her personal effects. This exhibition, curated by Artistic Director Vassilis Zidianakis, is presented on the second floor of the National Library of Greece and at the GNO Foyer at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). UNBOXING CALLAS will run through January 10th, 2024, between the hours of 10.00 and 21:00, Monday-Sunday. Entry is free of charge. The exhibition highlights the importance the Battle of Chaeronea had in ancient times, at the transition from the Classical to the Hellenistic period. "The latter became an era in which Greek civilization was dominant for centuries and laid the foundations of what we call the Western world," the MCA notes. "The theme is the battle that opposed the Macedonian army of Philip II against that of the allied Greek cities of southern Greece - and in particular the Sacred Band of Thebes and the army of Athens - a conflict that for the first time brought the eighteen-year-old Alexander to the front line of history: Alexander who was soon to conquer the world with his great campaigns in Asia." The exhibition was presented at a press conference on Wednesday by the Museum's antiquity curators Panagiotis Iossif (professor, University of Radboud, Holland) and Ioannis Fappas (assistant professor, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki). Several of the objects are on public view for the first time, with archaeological evidence originating in excavations of the Polyandrion of the Thebans and the Tumulus of the Macedonians, both sites of multiple burials. Some have not been fully published, while several were studied in detail during preparations for the exhibition. One of the outstanding exhibitions is that of the tomb of the warrior from Igoumenitsa wearing unique battle gear, the historical Macedonian shield inscribed with the name of King Alexander, golden staters (coins) issued by Philip, Alexander, and his successors, and the bones of the Sacred Band of Thebes soldiers. Relating to today Andy Warhol's 'Alexander the Great' (1981) portrait from MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art, one version of his iconic work that was commissioned by Greek collector Alexandros Iolas, is also on show. The show also honors Greece's early archaeologists at the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th, including reports of their excavations (Panagiotis Stamatakis, Georgios Sotiriadis, respectively). In addition, it includes information on how the modern Greek state handled the battle and its monuments in its narrative, and how the newspapers of those times saw it. Slowly forgotten, the Battle of Chaeronea rekindled the public's interest from the end of the 18th century, when the marble pieces of the fallen Lion of Chaeronia attracted visitors, academics, and locals. The exhibition is divided into nine units. The last one, "The Battle of Chaeronea today" looks at how the battle can be reconstructed for younger generations that might not be familiar with museums. It includes a diorama of the battle with Playmobil figurines especially made by collectors for the show, with the help of Playmobil Hellas, and descriptions through comics. "We examine the event itself, what follows, we see what this famed Hellenistic world that opens up after the battle of Chaeronea is, and we experience its consequences to this day. All the gold that the Western world used up to 1492 is the gold that Alexander brought in his campaign. In other words, objects that had very long-term consequences and that we are still experiencing today," Iossif said. Fappas, whose professional interest in Boeotia is long term, said that "the exhibition is unique because the objects are unique. If the specific objects did not exist, the exhibition could not have been done." He especially thanked his colleagues at the Boeotia Ephorate of Antiquities and the Antiquities Ephorate of Thesprotia prefecture, "for trusting us with immovable objects for the exhibition." He also thanked the Ministry of Culture's conservation laboratory and the National Monuments Archive directorate, "which guards treasures and archival material of unbelievable significance for our homeland's modern history." MCA president and CEO Sandra Marinopoulos said that the Museum wanted to provide a platform to new archaeologists, who can bring new thinking, creativity, and enthusiasm. She also announced that in April 2024 the museum would host the first museum exhibition in Greece of 100 photographs by Cindy Sherman, whose work continues to inspire and influence modern art today. The show will be part of the Museum's contemporary art program. Athens Concert Hall exhibits celebrate centennial of Maria Callas' birth Two exhibits of memorabilia and costumes related to Maria Callas (1923-1977) are held at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall until January 30, 2024 to commemorate the centennial of the legendary soprano's birth. Both are free to the public. The exhibit "Goodnight, I love you" shows aspects of Callas' personality on and off stage and takes its name from a phrase she used to tell her house staff. Curated by Lili Pezanou, the exhibition includes memorabilia and costumes from the collection of Nikos Charalambopoulos. It is open Monday-Sunday, 10:00-18:00 (Christos Lambrakis ground-level foyer). "Callas' magic" is based on books, programs, audiovisual material, and databases in the permanent collection of the Athens Concert Hall, particularly its Music Library of Greece 'Lilian Voudouri'. Curated by musicologist Gabriella Spano, the exhibition includes archival material from the donated collection of Constantine and Victoria Pylarinou and of bass Nikos Zachariou. It is open as follows: Monday-Friday (except Wednesday), 10:00-16:45, Wednesday, 10:00-19:00 ('Lilian Voudouri' library foyer). 'Visualising the voice of Maria Callas', a virtual reality installation by the National Opera The installation 'Visualising the Voice of Maria Callas' will be inaugurated at the Greek National Opera (GNO) foyer on Thursday, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center complex. The five experimental installations in virtual reality are a result of a workshop between the GNO and the Digital Media Lab (DmLab) at the Technical University of Crete. The focus of the exhibition is to examine the relation of space with sound, when Maria Callas' voice is heard in segments of the operas of Bellini ('Norma'), Puccini ('Tosca') and Verdi ('Traviata'). One of four events by the GNO for the Year of Maria Callas, the installation is free of charge and will be open Monday-Sunday from 10:00 to 21:00 until its conclusion on December 21. Following the exhibit, the installations will be uploaded in digital form on GNO TV and shown also at Chania (NW Crete) in the spring of 2024.

“Keep on going the proper way: Not with fireworks, not with easy applause, but with the expression of the words, the diction, and to really feel what you feel. That’s what I want. I’m not good at words, so that’s that.” The March 1972 speech was a detail little known to her admiring public, along with letters, jewellery and countless honors that include a postage stamp series from Kyrgyzstan and Congo. Now they are on display. The City of Athens inaugurated the Maria Callas Museum in the center of the Greek capital Wednesday, marking a century since the birth to Greek parents of the legendary soprano in New York. The museum, next to the city’s cathedral and with a view of the Acropolis, opens to the public Thursday, with sections of the museum connected by a red carpet. The top floors offer a recreated room of her Paris apartment, an imaginary forest and a sound studio, along with recordings of her famed live performances and clips of her lessons at The Juilliard School. Other display areas have exhibits of her costumes, hand-written letters and a sketch of a Callas-inspired Manolo Blahnik design. “I think we are primarily addressing a person who is the ordinary visitor who might not know much about opera. They might know much about Maria Callas,” museum supervisor Erato Koutsoudaki told The Associated Press. “So we invite them to start with the spaces where you can listen and watch her perform iconic arias from the great operas. So you can just live it. Then you can learn more about who this woman was and why she was important, on the lowers floors that are more like a conventional museum.” Born Maria Kalogeropoulos, the singer made her professional debut in Athens as an 18-year-old student and died in Paris aged 53 after a career that some still consider to be unrivalled in opera. Callas would have turned 100 on Dec. 2, and her life has been honored with a year of artistic events in Greece as well as the upcoming movie “Maria” starring Angelina Jolie. Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis at the museum’s inauguration thanked the staff and private donors. Many started work on the project when it was conceived 24 years ago, bringing the collection together through auction purchases, donations from private collections and negotiations for display rights with recording companies. “This is the first museum dedicated to Maria Callas that … combines technology with lived experience,” the mayor said. “We welcome this museum with great joy and deep respect for the great diva.”

In his address, Pompeo spoke of the significant relations between the United States and Greece and the Mediterranean, and emphasized security and economy issues, while referring to a common prosperity. Asked about the EastMed natural gas pipeline project, he said that it had progressed significantly but a lot remained to be done. The good news however, he said, was that the opportunities he saw as secretary of state in the East Mediterranean remained, and that the region’s location and infrastructure presented huge economic opportunities, as well as creating many openings and prosperity.

It is considered the largest retrospective of his work on a global scale, and is curated by experts from both Greece and France, besides EMST - in particular, curators from the Musée de la Musique-Philharmonie de Paris, the Estate Iannis Xenakis, and the Center for Contemporary Music Research-Athens Conservatory. It will also be the most extensive presentation of his music to a Greek audience, organizers said. The exhibit of the multifaceted artist, who died in 2001, will run on two floors of the Museum, the ground floor and the third floor. On the ground floor, the exhibition will focus on innovative approaches to music by Xenakis, who was trained as an architect and was a leading figure in the use of mathematical models in music. "Iannis Xenakis: Sound Odysseys" will be the most extensive presentation of his original work, unpublished sound material, architectural plans, and photographs, arranged into six units. On the third floor, the show "Xenakis and Greece" will review the composer's complicated relationship with Greece and the cultural context of his work, including his founding of the Center for Contemporary Music Research now housed at the Athens Conservatory. EMST will include sideline events (projections, recitals) that underline Xenakis' contribution to contemporary music. The Xenakis exhibition is part of the Museum's policy of highlighting the work of important artists of the Greek diaspora. It will run to July 1, 2024 (next year). The idea of the present exhibition had as its starting point the Athens International Airport and after going through various stages of processing, it was transferred to the classrooms of the University where it was delivered as an annual monothematic project to the students of the "Visual Art Applications" laboratory of the Department of Photography and Audiovisual Arts of the University of West Attica.  Student participants enthusiastically embraced the challenge and were engaged, for over a year, in the creation of original works through the collage technique, developing their ideas on the creative axes: Sky, Limited-Unlimited, Countries, Journeys, Nations, Earth, Travel, Space, Border-Borderless, etc. or adopting personal interpretations of concepts and terms. Visual and conceptual approaches followed literal, metaphorical, symbolic, realistic, hyperrealistic or abstract paths or even a combination of some of them. The central exhibition narrative revolves around the unique ensemble of wall paintings that adorn the building of the Parliament in the historical Hall of Trophies and Adjutants (current “Eleftherios Venizelos” Hall). These monumental frescoes stand for “talking” testaments of the Exhibition, as the portrayed figures and events come to the fore and invite us to an empathetic survey of the struggle for Freedom. In “discourse” with the wall paintings, are presented many and unique portable exhibits (manuscript archives, books, newspapers, artworks, objects and weapons), coming from the special collections of the Library of the Parliament, as well as from certain private ones, mainly the philhellenic collection of Michalis and Dimitra Varkarakis.   VENUE MAIN LIBRARY OF HELLENIC PARLIAMENT FOUNDATION START TIME SUNDAY 12:00 TICKETS ENTRANCE IS FREE
