Kalfayan Galleries present the solo exhibition of Edouard Sakayan entitled 'Les Toits de Paris'.

Opening: Thursday, January 25, 2024, 19.00-22.00.

Edouard Sakayan's painting provokes with its honesty and poetry. With his characteristic painting idiom which explores and constantly experiments with the limits of representation, the internationally recognized painter based in Athens and Paris, invites viewers to tour his own unique dream world where parade spectators, clowns, car drivers and swimmers. At the center of the artist's interest is, as always, the study of light, a fact that is vividly reflected in the new series entitled "Les toits de Paris" (The Rooftops of Paris) presented for the first time at Galerie Calfaian.

Here's the artist's note:
"Les Toits de Paris.
-The holy light on the roofs of Paris.
-When light becomes chaos and color precedes design.
-When design and geometry precedes color and the organic and the story begins to unfold the imagination.
-Naturally painting my window in Paris. Diary notes of the fluidity of light and its changes during the day. Works of observation as a balance with the fantastic works of "Festival", "Despots" and generally "Theaters". Then there are the everyday scenes from the streets where people walk and from the swimmers where the opposite condition exists, where the geometries from the positions are replaced by the fluidity of the sea. Also the puppeteer, the cars with the couples, the buses with the people, the various spaces as landscapes. And the self-portraits. Finally the work "Volcano" represents a fundamental chapter of my painting.

Brief CV
Eduardos Sakayan (b. 1957, Thessaloniki). He lives and works in Paris. He studied at the School of Fine Arts, Athens (1976-1981), workshops: Mytara, Morali) and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1984-87, Leonardo Cremonini's workshop). Awards: Painting Prize of the 18th Biennale of Alexandria (1994), "The Trophies of Color, the Lefranc-Bourgeois National Award for Painting", Lefranc-Bourgeois, Cirque d'Ivers, Paris (1992), Prix de l' Académie de Médecine de France (1987).

Recent solo exhibitions (selection): "Edouard Sakayan – The Gods. Works from the Sotiris Feliu Collection", Municipal Gallery of Corfu (2021), "Spectators, public, white horseman, crowd and herd", Teloglio Foundation, Thessaloniki (2020), "Les Spectateurs - Retrospective Édouard Sacaillan" (retrospective exhibition), Espace Richaud, Versailles, Paris (2018). He has presented his work in numerous group exhibitions in Greece and abroad (Centre Pompidou/Paris, Belvedere/Vienna, Museum of Art/Tel Aviv, National Gallery and Benaki Museum/Athens, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, etc.) His works are in important private and museum collections in Greece and abroad.
