About

Sculpture as an art form and a myth-oral tradition act as a common basis and creative starting point for the personal, particular, sensitive and at the same time dynamic visual gestures of 14 contemporary women artists in the exhibition entitled "Contemporary Womanhood 1.0: Contemporary Femininities" at MOMus- Alex Mylonas Museum in Athens, from 06 July to 08 October 2023.

In the exhibition, which is hosted completely targeted in the contemporary section
of sculpture by MOMus, a museum founded by the sculptor Alex Mylonas and dedicated to the art of sculpture, attempts an intangible bridging of
transition from the modern to the contemporary, not only in the medium of sculpture but also in artistic creation and life itself.

A key pillar of the exhibition's research is the work of psychoanalyst and activist Clarissa Pinkola Estes, and more specifically her book entitled "Women Who Run with the Wolves". Of the intuitive, probing and cathartic myths related to the indomitable nature of woman and captured in that book, this exhibition focuses on that of the Skeleton Woman, the best-known story from Eskimo oral tradition. According to the legend, a woman who experiences absolute despair and lives as a monstrous creature underwater, manages to keep the essence of her being intact and eventually be reborn, through the power of transformation.
The triptych of life – death – life described in the myth by becoming
death as a transitional path of transmutation, transformation and
mutation, acts as a common thread for the axes that run throughout it
exhibition: the medium of sculpture itself, the visual gesture, the position of the woman artist, and the mutation of all these from established ideas and entrenched, inaccessible and rigid patterns to something more fluid, new and ultimately alive again.

Guided tours are available at the exhibition with the entrance ticket, each
Saturday and Sunday at 13:00 (except 29-30.07, 12-13.08, 19-20.08). Registrations, tel. 210 3215717 or email: reception.mam@momus.gr

The exhibition will be framed by a program of parallel actions - lectures,
screenings, performance- to be announced in September.

The Museum will remain closed on August 15th (Fifteenth of August).
