In the Technological Cultural Park of Lavrio (Floating Building) will be presented the group art exhibition entitled "Laureotic Land, the echo of a distant era".

Twelve contemporary artists were invited to explore the intangible, material and environmental cultural heritage of Lavreotiki as part of the Lavreotiki Art Project, an initiative of artist Amalia Harikiopoulos.

The Lavreotiki land is a multi-layered place-monument, which, however, remains largely unknown. Through a months-long research process, the participants gathered information on mineral wealth, mining and metallurgical activity in ancient and modern times, the social structures that developed, as well as the effects of mineral exploitation. The process was first captured in the digital catalog "Lavreotiki Art Project" published by THE TELOS SOCIETY (2022).

The exhibition brings together original works created by the participating artists as a result of this process. Proposing a return to the place of Lavreotiki, he invites us to recognize the vantage points of its cultural landscape and to trace how history and the landscape can be transformed -temporarily- into laboratories of contemporary artistic creation.

The title of the exhibition makes a direct reference to the historical site and the land of priceless materials, which has been recognized as one of the longest-lasting and most valuable mining centers. At the same time, it also serves as a reminder of the temporality of the landscape and the people who lived and worked there. The phrase "the echo of a distant time" is a lyric of the song "Echoes" by Pink Floyd (1971). The nostalgia that emerges through the verse seems like an urge to move around and within the cultural landscape of the region, while the phrase itself could be a poetic formulation of the term "cultural heritage".

The exhibition will be hosted in the Floating Building of the Technological Cultural Park of Lavrio, which has been declared a protected monument of industrial architecture. Attempting to unfold the spirit of the place (genius loci), the exhibition reproduces the feeling of touring the landscape of Lavreotiki and reveals the elements that make up its heritage, as experienced by the participants. Photography, painting, performance, installations, sculptures and video art are recommended as ways to approach and care for "fragile wealth" (UNESCO's description of cultural heritage).
