On March 16, the internationally acclaimed cellist Michalis Heupel will perform a solo cello recital at the German Church of Athens (Sinai 66). Alongside the musical interpretation, the soloist presents the connections between the works and the stories they hide, inviting the audience to a more direct contact with the music.

The concert starts with the 2nd of Johann Sebastian Bach's suites, which were the inspiration and reference point for almost the entire solo cello repertoire that followed them. The program is complemented by works by three composers from the 20th century, each presenting a different approach to the soloist possibilities of the instrument.
The famous violinist Adolf Busch was inspired by both Bach and Max Reger to create, already in 1918, a short suite filled with the charm, complexity and spirit of the early 20th century.

On the opposite side are Bertold Hummel's works "Fantasia I" and "Abschied" which with simple musical language and intelligent use of cello characteristics present a special emotional depth. The recital concludes with the suite for solo cello by the cosmopolitan composer Alexander Tcherepnin. Deeply influenced by his long stay in China, Tcherepnin approaches folklore elements with particular ingenuity using the full range of the instrument and inventing new techniques, resulting in an interesting work full of humor.
