In initial projections, the OIV pegged world wine output, excluding juices and musts, at between 241.7 million and 246.6 million hectolitres (mhl), with a mid-range estimate of 244.1 mhl. This would be 7% lower than last year and the smallest since 1961 when it had fallen to 214 mhl, the OIV said. A hectolitre is the equivalent of 133 standard wine bottles. “This negative scenario can be attributed to significant declines in major wine-producing countries in both Hemispheres,” the OIV said in a statement. “While in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, and Brazil recorded year-over-year variations between -10% and -30%, in the Northern Hemisphere, Italy, Spain and Greece are the countries that suffered the most from bad climatic conditions during the growing season,” it said. OIV expects Italian wine production to drop 12% to 44 mlh, its lowest level since the poor harvest of 2017. The tumble means Italy will lose its position as the world’s largest wine producer, with France set to reclaim the number one spot for the first time in nine years. Drought-hit Spain kept its position as the third largest wine producer despite its production set to fall to the lowest in the last 20 years, down 14% fall in output from last year and down 19% on the five-year average. The sharp fall in Italian and Spanish production would lead to a 7% drop in EU output this year at 150 mhl, the third lowest production level since the beginning of the century. US wine output, the world’s fourth largest, was expected at 25.2 mhl this year, an increase of 12% from 2022. Cool temperatures and heavy winter rains in the Napa and Sonoma regions brought much-needed moisture to the vines after several years of drought, the OIV said.

The exhibition brings together each year the largest exhibitors from China, as well as abroad, while contracts worth more than 5 billion euros are signed while it is taking place. In 2018, 1,200 businesses with 5,000 product labels participated, while the number of visitors exceeded three million. Even last year, despite the pandemic, there were 1,100 exhibitors, while the honoured country was Argentina. This year, with China opening up after the coronavirus, the exhibition is expected to far surpass last year's numbers. The ambassador of Greece in Beijing, Evgenios Kalpyris, expressed the satisfaction of the Greek side for its participation as an honoured country in this year's expo, in a meeting with a delegation of the Municipal Authority of the city of Luzhou and representatives of the organisers, who visited the Greek Embassy to formalise their cooperation. "The exhibition, beyond its sectoral interest, is a multi-level event that offers the possibility of exchanges and collaborations in other sectors as well, such as tourism or culture," pointed out Kalpyris. The Greek participation will be coordinated by the Office of Economic and Commercial Affairs of the Greek Embassy, while, as noted by the Greek Ambassador, the main objective of the Greek mission will be to take advantage of this year's dynamic Greek presence to create relations and strengthen human ties with the Chinese producers and professionals but also with the ordinary citizens of western China.

The 3-day mini food expo aims to showcase to Athenians the broad selection of foods produced at two of North Evia's municipalities that were most heavily afflicted by the wildfires in the summer of 2021, Istiea-Edipsos and Mantoudi-Limni-Agia Anna. The exhibition is co-organized by the Central Greece Regional Authority and the 'Diazoma' association. It is held under the auspices of the City of Athens, and it is sponsored by the Association of Fertilizer Traders & Producers (SPEL). This expo is being held in the context of the North Evia Reconstruction Program (EVIA-META). It will be inaugurated at 18:00 on Friday and will stay open to the public until 21:00 that day, while on Saturday and Sunday the exhibition will be open from 10:00 until 21:00. The event is being organized for the 2nd year, this year on December 11th and hours 11:30-20:00, in the brand new and highly minimalist aesthetic hall "Foyer Arts" of the Athens Conservatory. "Foam and Nectar" is a unique rendezvous for wine lovers with the enchanting bubbles of the foams and the velvety warmth of the sweet wines. Among the sparkling wines, champagne had and still has a special role, the French sparkling wine exclusively from the region of Campania (Champagne), which remains the undisputed queen of wine bubbles. It cannot, however, be noted that Greek sparkling wines continue to flourish for years. As for sweet wines, where Greece plays world class, these cover most of the "dessert wine" category, but it also includes fortified wines, which are not necessarily sweet.   The purpose of "Foam & Nectar" is twofold: To taste champagnes and other sparkling wines, as well as dessert wines (sweet and fortified) just before the period when their consumption peaks (Christmas holidays), in order to select labels that will be consumed during it and To introduce the wine-loving public to the consumption of sparkling and dessert wines all year round, without or with food, before or after it, i.e. in any case and not necessarily on the occasion of a special event or a specific accompaniment. "Afros & Nektar", in addition to the wines of Greek wine producers and wine importers in Greece, this year hosts in a special stand the Greek sweet wines that were recently awarded at the international competition Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. In another stand, foreign sparkling and sweet wines are presented, which have recently distinguished themselves in the same competition, which is one of the leading and largest in the world. And its president, Baudouin Havaux, will be in Greece especially for "Foam & Nectar" to talk about the successes achieved by Greek sweet wines in said competition, represented in Greece by the company Vinetum, organizer of the event.   Try sparkling and sweet wines with food… Sparkling wines go well with many dishes, some are even able to accompany entire meals. This role has already been highlighted by the "Foam and Bubbles" event, one part of today's "Foam & Nectar", through several top sponsors of "tasting pleasure" who stopped by and gave the opportunity to its visitors to try the products accompanying wines, such as Stremenou Butchery, Voulgaraki Group Restaurants, Le Votre Piree Patisserie, Maltezos Farm Goat Cheeses, Degustibus Delicatessen, Trikalinos Traditional Roe, Provence Deli Cheeses, etc. To a lesser extent, sweet wines can also accompany food, when the sweet element in them is strong. However, where they have been established and offer the best in combination are with Roquefort-type cheeses (e.g. Stilton, Gorgonzola, blue cheeses, etc.). "Foam & Nectar" encourages all relevant experimentation. And the waters of "Foam & Nectar" could not be other than the quiet Acqua Panna, and the sparkling S.Pellegrino, from Nestle, ideally to accompany wines.
