About

The 1st MUSAI Music and Artificial Intelligence Festival comes to the Alternative Stage of the National Opera House at SNFCC with the participation of fourteen Greek musicians and an international artist.

For two days, on June 1 and 2, 2023, at 20.00, the public will have the opportunity to enjoy artists from different musical worlds interacting with tools of new technologies and artificial intelligence and sometimes integrating them in an improvisational way, in real time, and sometimes as compositional tools in music creation.

In the program of the MUSAI Festival, acoustic instruments meet electric sounds and live visuals, analog processors interact with sensors of movement and brain signals, and the primitive timbres of the vocal idioms of the Eastern Mediterranean become musical mosaics in creations of microstructural (granular) composition.

The festival is held with the grant of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the scientific guidance of the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Learning Systems of the National Technical University of Athens and the LabMat of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as the cooperation of the Alternative Stage of the Hellenic Theater.

On the first day of the Festival (1/6) the versatile multi-instrumentalist and composer Telemachos Mousas opens with an ambient-experimental program. Then the experimental musicians Spyros Polychronopoulos on electronics and Yannis Anastasakis on the guitar will appear, accompanied by live visuals by the visual artist Natalia Mandas, and Dance with Invisible Partners, a project by the scientist and musician Kostis Gardikis, will continue with dark pop pieces that have been co-created with the use of artificial intelligence.

The second day of the Festival (2/6) brings to the stage the collaboration of the researcher and performer Natalia Kotsani with Tassos Kofodimos on voice and lute, Haris Lambrakis on the new, Giotis Kiourtsoglou on electric bass and Vangelis Karipis on percussion in a special musical meeting dedicated to the songs of the Mediterranean and the interaction of traditional vocal idioms and tools of microstructural (granular) composition. The Festival concludes with the appearance of the French singer and ethnomusicologist Françoise Atlan, who has carved out a remarkable career thanks to her special vocal color and the expressive style with which she approaches the Sephardic, Arabic and Andalusian repertoire.
