Periodical exhibition "PANOPLIES - The art of armor in Ancient Greece"

About

On Tuesday, April 19, 2022, the official opening of the new periodical exhibition "PANOPLIES - The art of armor in Ancient Greece" hosted at the Kotsana Museum took place, with all solemnity and with strict adherence to health protocols. The event was graced by the presence of representatives of science, technology, journalism, letters and culture.

After the opening ceremony, there was a tour and guided tour of the exhibition by the creator of the exhibits. The inspiration and creation of the exhibition is a private initiative of Mr. Dimitrios Katsikis who, after a long and thorough study, succeeded in reviving the ancient art of the charioteer in the present day and offering the public works of high aesthetic as well as scientific value. His private collection has so far traveled and been recognized in Europe and America and has been hosted by a number of university and cultural institutions.

The exhibition offers the historical panorama of the main types of armor manufacturing, covering the period from the late Greek to the late Byzantine era, bringing to the fore a tradition and history of about 3,000 years.

Flagship stations across the spectrum from the 15th c. e.g. up to the 14th century A.D. highlight the continuum of armor production techniques in antiquity with the armors of Achilles, Agamemnon and Odysseus, Spartan and Athenian armour, the linen breastplate of Alexander the Great and the Kataphractus Armor of the mid-Byzantine period marking some of the most important evidence of this historical continuity.

All armors are a complete artistic composition in life size and with recognized scientific validity. The construction of the armor in real dimensions is a perfect result of artistic creativity which is based on knowledge that the creator, as a researcher, has obtained by studying and combining archaeological finds around the world as well as historical and literary sources.

An innovative exhibition that combines in an excellent way Greek art with technology, aesthetics with practicality and revives in an exciting way the forgotten art of Greek chariot making that has so influenced the Greek and European historical view.

The Museum conducts experiential tours of the exhibition by specialized staff for students of all school levels. (Duration of the tour: 60 minutes - maximum number of participants: 25 people per group/school department, with necessary pre-booking by phone at tel. 211 411 00 44 or 6907-292002)
