Kalfayan Galleries present the solo exhibition of Antonis Donef entitled "Symbols of Selflessness".
In his calligraphic designs and his collage works, Antonis Donef captures a purely personal multifarious and colorful personal view of Knowledge. Antonis Donef's interest in exploring the limits of knowledge, as well as theories of learning, is reflected in the new series of works presented at the Kalfayan gallery: complex multi-layered collages on canvas made up of sections of vintage maps that the artist collects during his travels in Greece and abroad.
The time-consuming process of cutting each map into dozens of strips and pasting them into overlapping layers that form geometric patterns in an organic way captures the artist's disposition to recompose knowledge.
At the same time, this deconstruction and reassembly of parts from different maps creates new maps, in which official borders become entangled and ultimately annulled. These geographical palimpsests depict the current geopolitical turmoil around the world and make Antonis Donef's works more relevant than ever. Furthermore, they redefine and reinterpret already mapped knowledge while challenging polarized and rigid learning strategies that ignore the uniqueness of heterogeneity.
